Haunted Patient Room Frightens Interns

Physicians are scientists. They tend to favor evidence-based medicine, robust research studies, and cold, hard logic. Ghosts and superstitions do not typically fall under those categories. But in room 513, a series of odd events has caused a group of medicine interns at Hospital Woeisme to question their disbelief in the supernatural.

The cadre of new residents was eager to share their stories from 513. Dr. One explained, “I immediately felt a sense of foreboding when I entered the room. I was supposed to do a procedure on the patient in there. But I just had a bad feeling, like I already knew I’d mess it up. And you know what? I totally did. Just froze, right there, at the patient’s bedside.”

Dr. Two jumped in and shared her tale from the fated room. “Well, it was late at night, no, actually it was early in the morning, like 3 or 4 am, I’d been awake for nearly 24 hours since I was on an overnight call. I got paged to that room, but when I got there, the nurse said that no one had paged me and that I must have imagined it. But I didn’t make it up! There’s some weird stuff going on in there.”

Other interns nodded in agreement. Dr. Three added, “It wasn’t until I failed intubating someone in 513 that I started believing all the hype – that room is totally haunted.” Three shivered and looked around, as if expecting to see a ghost materialize from the ether. Dr. Four jumped in and said, “A senior resident once told me that someone died in that room, which is why so many weird things keep happening there.” Quoting The Usual Suspects, Dr. Four added, “I don’t believe in God, but I’m afraid of 513.”

The interns spent the rest of the afternoon sharing stories of patient encounters gone awry, failed procedures, equipment going missing, and other unexplainable mishaps. The consensus among the interns is that 513 is undeniably haunted. With so many stories like that, it must be, right?

On leaving the resident workroom, neurology attending Dr. Bellum was spotted near 513. When asked her opinion she said, “Well, yeah, of course someone died there, Woeisme is an old hospital. At least a couple of patients have died in each room and almost every hallway. Also about half the elevators, five in the cafeteria, two in the coffee shop, and one at the ATM. We’re kind of a mecca for sick and dying people, you know. Besides, the interns will look for any excuse to explain their f*** ups.”

Perhaps the patients should be more frightened of 513 than the doctors.
